The Secret

My housemate recommended me this particular book (The Secret by Rhonda Byrne) before. Overall, it's worth reading, that's what she told me as she read the Chinese version(duplicated version..but in Chinese????) 0.o

Well, since I barely even could read a Chinese character(what's more with the old version 'fan ti zi' of Chinese characters normally used in book writing and articles), I decided to check out for it in the bookstore soon.. and of course, the original version! :)

Anyway, since I have not read neither own the book yet, here's a review (by Deanna Joseph) I've searched online.

Released first as a DVD in 2006, “The Secret” has been causing quite a stir, and now that it’s available in a book it’s popularity has soared off the charts!

First off, I must say it’s a very attractive book. The pages are glossy, and have the look of parchment.

The cover is embossed with the Secret logo, and looks like an ancient manuscript. The book itself is smaller in size, (5 ½ inches by 7 ¼ inches – or 14 ½ cm by 18 ½ cm). It has 10 chapters, the biographies of the contributors and is 198 pages.

The chapters are as follows:

The Secret Revealed
The Secret Made Simple

How to Use The Secret Powerful Processes
The Secret to Money

The Secret to Relationships

The Secret to Health

The Secret to the World
The Secret to You

At the end of each chapter there is a list of “Secret Summaries” which sum up the information in that particular chapter. Overall, “The Secret” is about the law of attraction, or “as a man thinketh, so shall he reap…” The Secret speaks of taking responsibility for ourselves and learning to go inside ourselves for happiness rather than counting on someone else or some new situation to make us happy.

Have you ever made any of the following statements to yourself? If only I had more money, then I could do what I wanted to do and be happy.” " If only i could only loose this excess weight, then i'd be happy." " If only i had a romantic partner, then my life would be perfect.

If you have ever said any of these statements to yourself (and we all have!) then you are looking toward something outside yourself to make you happy. Honestly, it’s all already inside of us! We don't need anything to make us happy, we can do that on our own. If you think this sounds too good to be true. Well, you're right. It is.

But it doesn’t change the fact that it works! Honestly, “The Secret” isn’t the first book to come up with the theory of the law of attraction, and any internet search will come up with thousands of articles and books on the subject.

But it’s the first I’ve seen to put the law of attraction so simply. And it’s the first I’ve ever seen that has had so many quotes from so many sources (including the Bible) and so many contributors, including scientists, doctors, life and business coaches, authors, ministers, and metaphysicians from both the past and the present. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is finally ready to make lasting changes in their life.

I will be the first to admit that sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in our dramas. But our dramas only bring us more of the same. The Secret helps us to create a new way of thinking so that instead of attracting those same old dramas, we attract happiness and the life we’ve always dreamed of.

Hmm, Law of attraction... Robert mentioned it once to me before during my working period in JTM. Despite of applying the Law of Average (another LOA) in our job, he shared with me about the Law of Attraction as well.

Law of Attraction is described as how we perceive our thoughts in daily lives to achieve our goals/desires.

It's more like you believing in the possibilities of having/establish that desires of yours be it on that very day (hitting that target/goal(s) of yours for the day)or in your life .

By the way (nothing related with the above), just when i was about to hit the sack last night, an ex-colleague of mine SMSed me..

"Just remember life is all about trial and error. You never tried, you'll never knew what is right and what is that you want. Most importantly, you willing to give everything a try and maintain confident with yourself, believe in yourself and life would be easier for you..."

The right words..at the perfect timing. That's what i really wanna hear at this very moment (well you would know what i'm talking about if you've read the previous entries in this blog ), Justin. Thanks my friend. (".)

The Secret is the latest and by far the worst example of a HIGHLY profitable trend where self-help gurus with fabricated new age titles and little relevant education, credentials or legitimate expertise brainwash us into believing that they know what is best for us, our marriages and our families.

Often their only contribution to society is introducing some exotic sounding, new age philosophy. However, they often cleverly form an incestuous group of like-minded “experts” who cross-promote each other by swearing their success is due to following the beliefs of another member of their “cult!” All the while, they ply the airwaves jockeying for an ever-larger audience by appearing in the national media to garner third-party endorsements.

The Self-Help Movement has become the Self-Destruct Movement by diminishing or destroying our critical thinking skills to choose and evolve on our own. We have given up the freedom to build healthy lives, marriages and families based on our unique history and life experience. Instead many victims, blinded to the value of their own life experiences, are attracted to the latest secret in self-help, in an attempt to find out what they should think, feel and how they should act... this is the definition of a cult.

The solution is a return to our (common) senses! The best way out of this learned “self-helplessness” is to go cold turkey. Stop following ALL self-help gurus now. Begin, instead, to reclaim your natural, God-given ability to think for yourself. The common sense that was once readily available to all of us is still there free of charge and waiting to be applied to just about any challenge we might face in life… all you have to do is use it.

Please, let's all work together to stop the flock of "sheepeople" who blindly move from one UNPROVEN concept to the next, looking for the answers to life's challenges that you already possess and that is the OBVIOUS!

Hi Dr John Curtis,

Firstly, i was surprised to read this comment as i didn't expect an immediate response to this entry that i've just posted a few minutes ago, what's more from a person with a doctorate background (correct me if i'm wrong).

Little do i know about the controversial philosophy regarding all of this created self-help gurus and the in depth of the content of the book as i merely only posted the online review of the book as I plan to look out for it.

Thus, i hope that you wouldn't interpret my post here as to promote this book ( and the ideology used perhaps) as i meant no cruel intention behind all of this.

And of course, we are gifted with the ability to think ourselves and the common senses, thus the choices are totally up to the person to discern.

Above it all, i respect your say and sharing regarding this book as it's an eye opening for people like me as well as to my blog readers to know such issue.

Thank you for the comment.
